Arabian Nights Festival. Early-May. Nicknamed the Baghdad of Miami-Dade county, Opa-Locka, with its Islamic architecture, hosts an annual festival of live music and theatrical presentations at its airport. Call (305) 688-4611 for more information.

Humidity. Memorial Day Weekend. Parties, seminars and workshops drawing attendance from all over the U.S. and the Caribbean highlight this weekend long event held in a variety of venues around the greater Miami area, sponsored by Black-Latin Gay Pride to benefit research on HIV/AIDS. June 2004

Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival. Early-June. Coconut Grove's summer street party celebrating the initial Bahamian and Keys Conch residents. Call (305) 372-9966 for more information.

Florida Dance Festival.

American Black Film Festival

July 2004

4th of July -- Miami Beach. July 4. Celebrate the holiday on the sand, to the sounds of live local and Islands music, and enjoy one of the better views of the fireworks, at Collins Avenue near 72nd Street. Call (305) 539-3063 for more information.

International Mango Festival.
Early-July. Enjoy all kinds of delicious mangos, and pick up a tree for your yard, sponsored by Fairchild Tropical Garden. Call (305) 667-1651 for more information.

Everglades Music and Crafts Festival.
Late-July. Alligator wrestling, air boat rides, Native American live music, crafts and authentic food highlight this annual event at the Miccosukee Village. Call (305) 223-8380 for more information.

August 2004

Super Sand Blast. Mid-August. On Ocean Drive, between 9th and 10th Streets, kids and their guests can enjoy a sand castle building competition, live music from the Islands, face painting and free food. Call (305) 673-7030 for more information.

Antique and Jewelry Show. Late-August. The Coconut Grove Expo Center hosts an exhibition and trade fair for hundreds of jewelers, jewelry makers and their patrons. Call (305) 444-8454 for more information.

September 2004

Music Fest. Early-September. Bring a blanket and spend the day enjoying local sounds, from reggae and salsa to jazz and gospel. Call (305) 358-7550 for more information.

International Ballet Festival.
Mid-September. The Jackie Gleason and Manuel Artime Theaters host the world's best ballet companies performing their contemporary work. Call (305) 535-0255 for more information.

Florida Keys Poker Run. Mid-September. Watch or participate with 20,000 others in the annual biker run between Miami and Key West, with all proceeds going to charity. Call (305) 294-3032 for more information.

Festival Miami. Late-September. Chamber music, jazz and other genres are performed by international artists during this 5-week festival at Gusman Hall, sponsored by the University of Miami School of Music. Call (305) 284-4940 for more information.

Afro-Cuban Festival. Late-September to Early-October. Everything from Conga lines to history lectures comprise this annual celebration of African, Caribbean and Cuban culture, at the Wolfson Campus of Miami-Dade Community College. Call (305) 476-0388 for more information.

October 2004

Florida / Brazil Festival. All-October. Contemporary Brazilian writers, dancers, composers and musicians present their art in a number of indoor and outdoor venues. Call (305) 324-4337 for more information.

Discovery of America Day. Early-October. This all-day festival of ethnic food, live music and fun includes a re-enactment of Columbus' discovery of America, at Bayfront Park Amphitheatre. Call (305) 541-5023 for more information.

Hispanic Heritage Festival. All-October. This celebration that lasts the whole month commemorates the discovery of the Americas, and the role Hispanics have played in the development of the U.S. It takes place in different locations throughout Miami-Dade County. Miami Carnival. Mid-October. Latin celebrations with food, music, dance, parades and fireworks. Call (305) 653-1877 for more information.

Columbus Day Regatta. Mid-October More than 230 sailboats from over 15 classes sail from the north end of Biscayne Bay to the southern end, and back the following day. Call (305) 573-9592 for more information.

Metroboo.
Late-October. A family oriented seasonal celebration with trick-or-treating and costume contests at Metrozoo. Call (305) 255-5551 for more information.

The Pro Player Stadium/Calder Race Course Halloween Bash. October 31st. Halloween Bash and Community Party takes place at Pro Player Stadium. Call (305) 623-6286 for more information.

FIU Music Festival. Late-October to Mid-November. Every year, the world's best talent performs the full spectrum of musical genres showcasing the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at Florida International University's South Campus. Call (305) 662-6960 for more information.

November 2004

Ramble -- A Garden Festival. Early-November. Enjoy this annual gardening festival with plants, garden accessories and activities for the whole family, hosted by Fairchild Tropical Garden. Call (305) 667-1651 for more information.

Miami Bookfair International.
Mid-November. Hear authors read their own works, explore ancient autographs and enjoy a street party for literati at one of the largest gatherings of booksellers in the country, at the Wolfson Campus of Miami-Dade Community College. Call (305) 237-3032 for more information.

White Party Week. Mid-November. A week of tea dances, fashion shows and an elegant bash at Villa Vizcaya highlight this annual HIV/AIDS fundraiser, at various venues throughout the city. Call (305) 667-9296 for more information.

Annual WinterNational Thanksgiving Day Parade. Thanksgiving Day. Participants include walkers, riders, bikers, clowns, beauty queens, bands and floats in South Florida's only Thanksgiving Day Parade, on 125th Street from NE 6th Avenue to NE 12th Avenue. Call (305) 893-6511 for more information.

Broward County Fair.
Late-November to Early-December. One of America's oldest and most representative county fairs draws local farmers and residents to Pompano Park. Call (954) 450-1234 for more information.

December 2004

Santa's Enchanted Forest.
All-December to Early-January. Tropical Park is decorated with over 3 million lights, and hosts the world's largest outdoor Christmas fair, with a petting zoo and visits from Santa. Call (305) 226-8315 for more information.

Art Basel. Mid-December. Patterned after the June festival in Switzerland, artists, photographers, filmmakers and art entrpreneurs convene at the Miami Beach Convention Center and other venues in the Art Deco Historic District. Call (305) 539-3063 for more information.

Heart of the City.
Late-December. African cuisine, music and dance are featured in this Kwanzaa festival at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium. Call (305) 636-2350 for more information.
King Mango Strut. Late-December. A light-hearted parody of a the Orange Bowl parade down the streets of Coconut Grove. Call (305) 401-1171 for more information.

The Nutcracker. Late-December. Performed annually by the Miami City Ballet at the Jackie Gleason Theater and other South Florida venues. Call (305) 929-7010 for more information.
Junior Orange Bowl Festival. Late-December. This children's version of the Orange Bowl celebrations features arts and crafts shows and sports competitions. Call (305) 662-1210 for more information.
