January 2004

25. Bicentennial Kickoff on the New Orleans Riverfront - Louisiana Legends The Great Steamboat Race. On Saturday, January 25, 2003 there will be a riverboat race between the American Queen Steamboat and the Steamboat Natchez to celebrate the bicentennial year as well as produce revenue for local charities. Guests aboard will include ticketed passengers, local dignitaries, school children who have won the Bicentennial Poster Contest, writer Douglas Brinkley and steamboat portrait artist Michael Blazer. Official “race historian,” Captain Doc Hawley, a former master and pilot of both boats, will emcee along with Lewis Hankins, in his portrayal of Mark Twain.

February 2004

14. Valentine's Day Cruise on the Steamboat Natchez. "Romance on the River" includes a welcome glass of champagne, hors d'oeuves, buffet dinner, open bar, DJ for dinner music and dancing, and a moonlit cruise on the Mississippi River! March 2004

4. Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras Season begins on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6. Mardi Gras is a time for parties, parades, balls and celebrations. The final day is Mardi Gras Day or Fat Tuesday. This is held on the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, when we traditionally sacrifice in imitation of Our Lord's 40-day fast in the dessert. Greatest free show on earth! Many Mardi Gras Day parades begin at 8am and parades continue past sundown.

April 2004

16. French Quarter Festival. Free 3 day community event held throughout the historic French Quarter. Local restaurants participate in the "world's largest jazz brunch"; local musicians perform on 13 stages. Second-line parade, fireworks over the Mississippi River, patio tours, children's events. You can't get more New Orleans than this showcase for hundreds of local musicians on 14 stages throughout the historic Vieux Carré. There's jazz, from Dixieland to contemporary and brass bands, classical, Cajun and zydeco, rhythm and blues, gospel and everything else in between. Plus sample classic New Orleans cuisine from nearly 60 food and drink booths, kick your heels up at an opening evening gala, tour private patios, enjoy fireworks over the Mississippi River, participate in children's activities, join in a second-line parade, attend art exhibits & music workshops and lots more.

30. 29th Annual Louisiana Crawfish Festival. St. Bernard Civic Center, 8245 W. Judge Perez Dr., Chalmette, La. The Louisiana Crawfish Fesitval will offer an array of crawfish dishes. And over sixty amusement rides and fun booths for all ages.

May 2004

28. Greek Festival. Celebrating Greek culture in the Crescent City, featuring food, music, and more!

June 2004

French Market Tomato Festival. Featuring cooking demonstrations, tomato tastings, and musical entertainment .

July 2004

2. Essence Festival. This party with a purpose features top performers, empowerment seminars, and events that make it the largest African-American entertainment gathering in the country. Each year offers a new and dazzling list of headliners in the Superdome. Past performers have included: Luther Vandros, Grammy sensation Alicia Keys, Cedric The Entertainer, india.arie, and , Mary J. Blige, the Isley Brothers, Ronald Isley, Faith Evans, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Steve Harvey, Al Green, Angie Stone. Inside the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center empowerment seminars are held daily with leading African-American intellectuals, political activists, and religious and social leaders. Spectacular speakers offer meaningful insight into matters of spirituality, love, popular culture and more. These seminars offer food for the soul and make Essence a party with a purpose.Look for the Essence Marketplace, featuring fabulous New Orleans cuisine, Afro-centric arts and crafts, author book signings, celebrity meet and greets, the Essence boutique, and festival souvenirs.

4. Go 4th on the River. Join us for our annual 4th of July celebration with activities and entertainment for the entire family along the riverfront, ending with a spectacular fireworks show over the Mississippi River.

August 2004

4. Satchmo SummerFest. The multi-faceted event will include a centennial conference, a Satchmo-inspired music festival, intimate seminars, musical demonstrations, children's activities, a "club" crawl, a jazz mass and second-line parade, and lots more.

December 2004

24. Christmas on the River. From Baton Rouge to New Orleans, bonfires are lit along the Mississippi River to help guide Papa Noel to the Crescent City!
