Volcano National Park (VNP)

The VNP is home to Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Located about 3-hrs drive from the Kona Coast, it is understandably the most popular attraction on the Big Island. Upon arrival, I checked with the park's visitor's center to ask about Volcano viewing since the flow is always changing. While there, I hiked with the park rangers for a chance to get the best view of the molten lava as it rolls towards the ocean. Hiking the VNP isn't very difficult and my gym shoes worked perfectly. Hiking boots aren't required.

The Halemaumau Trail in the park is a 3.2-mile trail that offers views of the steaming crater. If you are not up for hiking or the weather isn't great, the Thomas A. Jaggar museum, located about three miles from the park entrance offers panoramic views of Kilauea Caldera as well as various displays featuring Hawaiian culture. The VNP can also be explored by driving. You can get to the summit of Kilauea Volcano by way of the Crater Rim Drive, an 11- mile loop road that encircles the summit caldera. Along the way, you pass through a desert, cross the caldera floor, and go through a tropical rainforest.

In my opinion, on of the best way to view the volcano is from a helicopter. I highly recommend Blue Hawaiian helicopter. Every year since 1998, the Federal Aviation Administration has honored Blue Hawaiian Helicopters' Aircraft Maintenance Technicians with its Certificate of Excellence - "Diamond Award." No other helicopter tour company in Hawaii has ever received this award. In addition, Blue Hawaiian offers the latest in a line of cutting-edge achievements unmatched in the Hawaii helicopter tour industry. As a person that experiences motion sickness, my flight was so smooth and amazing I made it without nausea.

As far as lodging goes, the best place to stay while visiting VNP is the Kilauea Lodge. It is a beautiful, elegant and moderately priced property located just miles from the VNP. All the rates include a gourmet breakfast, which must not be missed. The lodge is also located close to the Hamakua coast, Hilo, Akaka Falls and much more.
