Millie Lee began selling orchids as Orchids by Millie in the mid '90s in a 3,000 sq. ft. greenhouse at her home in Raleigh. In 1998 she opened a retail greenhouse in North Hills that grew to include 9 employees (orchid arrangers), a “pot room” filled with unique cachepots and planters, and unusual tropical plants that could be used in her orchid arrangements or sold alone. Orchids by Millie became a household word in the orchid arrangement market as Millie expanded her services to provide orchid rentals for special events, homes and businesses.
In 2000, Barbara McGuire became a partner with visions of expanding the business even further. Barbara and Millie purchased Atlantic Avenue Lawn and Garden Center in November 2002 which had been in operation since 1989. The garden center is located on Atlantic Avenue in Raleigh and contains 5.8 acres of trees, shrub, perennials, annuals, and garden supplies with a staff of 46 horticultural specialists.
