Kicking back in the Big Easy

When most people think of New Orleans, thoughts of Mardi gras, wild parties and sleepless nights come to mind. But there is more to this sultry city than meets the eye. When it comes to down home cooking and real Southern hospitality, there is no better place. Thanks to this, New Orleans has some of the best restaurants in the world. From its spicy cuisine to its amazing architecture, a vacation to New Orleans arouses the spirits.

Saturday

Start your day with beignets (deep-fried squares of dough topped with powered sugar)and chicory coffee at the Cafe du Monde in the French Quarter and then take a stroll. The French Quarter, one of the first areas settled by the French and the Spanish in the 1700's, still has a very European flair. Its walk able streets, historic buildings, eclectic antique and art shops, gift shops, jewelry stores and fashion boutiques, makes it one of the most popular destinations in New Orleans. Streets like Bourbon Street is home to some of the best jazz clubs in New Orleans like Bourbon Street Blues Co.

The French Market, the oldest public market in the country is allocated here.It offers five blocks of shopping (including a farmers market), dining and entertainment. For those with a passion for antiques, Royal Street offers an amazing collection of galleries, with everything from estate jewelry to grandfather clocks and much more.

If you are still in the mood for more shopping, Jackson Brewery located across Jackson Square (the hub of the French Quarter for over three centuries), is a brew house that houses over 50 shops and several restaurants and cafes. Only a half block from Jackson Square, just around the corner from St. Louis Cathedral and the Cabildo, is the Gumbo shop (www.gumboshop.com). This restaurant, housed in a 1795 building where old murals depict scenes of Mardi gras has been a New Orleans institution for over 50 years. Casual, relaxed and elegant, this restaurant serves up some of the most outstanding Creole cuisine. From seafood okra gumbo to hot bread pudding smothered in whiskey sauce, this place really cooks. Gumbo Shop, 630 Saint Peter St., (504) 525-1486, www.gumboshop.com
