| Where
to stay You
can't come to South Beach without staying at one of its Art Deco gems that have
been turned into beautiful boutique hotels. "Art Deco" is used to refer
to a mix of styles from the1920's and 1930's. Most of these hotels share the hallmarks
of geometry and simplicity, often combined with vibrant colors and simple shapes
that celebrate the rise of commerce and technology. The
Hotel, located on the corner of 8th and Collins in the heart of South Beach, is
one of my favorite hotels on the beach. This upscale 1939 art deco hotel is only
a block from the beach and has been fully restored by Todd Oldham, the world-renowned
fashion designer. From airbrushed tiles in a water motif to woven ribbon pillowcases,
no details have been spared. Its 52 guestrooms and suites feature soundproof rooms,
blackout curtains, and soft lighting. Unlike most hotels in its price range, every
room is fully equipped with a stereo set, complete with a CD player and VCR. Its
swimming pool is located on the roof and has stunning views of the beach where
drinks, breakfast and lunch are served. The staff here is very friendly and courteous.

For
a tranquil setting in the heart of bustling South Beach on the corner of 13th
and Collins, is the La Flora hotel. With only 28 guestrooms and suites, this hotel
offers a warm and intimate setting. Its elegant rooms are spacious and nicely
appointed with all the necessary amenities while the hotels warm decor compliments
its friendly staff. In fact, what makes this hotel so special is the staff's ability
to treat its guest like family. This boutique hotel provides outstanding service
usually found in four or five star properties. With rates starting at only $99
per night including continental breakfast, this hotel is a steal for the budget
traveler with style. La Flora, 1238 Collins Ave., (305) 531-3406, www.laflorahotel.com
Another
South Beach jewel is the Doubletree Surfcomber hotel located on the corner of
17th and Collins. This hotel is right on the beach and about a block away from
Lincoln road. Unlike it pricier neighbors like the Delano and National, this property
has the same ambiance at half the price. Guest here will enjoy the chic and trendy
decor along with the nicely appointed rooms. This property also offers an Olympic
size pool, surrounded by palm trees with direct access to the beach. Its courteous
staff serves the drinks and meals in the pool bar. With about 200 rooms, the Surfcomber
is perfect for people looking to stay in a larger moderately priced hotel with
great service. Doubletree Surfcomber hotel, 1717 Collins Ave., (305) 532-7715,

on the corner of 6th and Ocean, the Park Central hotel is considered to be one
of renowned architect Henry Hohauser's best work and one of South Beach's most
famous landmarks. Some of the most notable features are the three octagonal windows
above the entrance and its terrazzo floors. Its rooms are nicely appointed with
Philippine mahogany furnishings - originals that were restored. The hotel has
a swimming pool and fitness center. What makes this hotel so special is its location.
You're right across the street from the beach. If you can, splurge on one of the
ocean view suites like room 519. Believe me, you won't regret it. Park Central
