Sonesta 800 Iberville
St., New Orleans, LA 70112
| On
the site of the former D. H. Holmes Canal Street Department Store (1849), the
Chateau Sonesta Hotel opened in 1995, making it one of the newer hotels in the
French Quarter. While the building maintains the 1913 facade, inside is a generic
high-end hotel, popular among business groups for its meeting rooms and location.
At the Canal Street entrance is a newly erected statue of Ignatius Reilly, hero
of A Confederacy of Dunces, whom we first met when he was waiting, as all of New
Orleans once did, "under the clock"--the old Holmes clock now located
in a bar, was for decades the favored rendezvous point for tout New Orleanians.
Guest rooms are large, and many feature balconies overlooking Bourbon or Dauphine
streets. In addition to in-house movies, videos are available for rental.
The
three suites with whirlpool baths surround an atrium. On the corner is the Storyville
District Jazz Club. Save between $20 and $100 on ALL Hotel Bookings Now! | | | | | | | Edgar
Degas House 2306 Esplanade Ave., New Orleans, LA 70119
| The
French Impressionist painter lived here from 1872 to 1873. This historic home,
built in 1852, has been carefully restored following original floor plans and
colors, which include pale peach, celadon, and golden mustard. Second-floor rooms
are spacious and have chandeliers that hang from 14-ft ceilings; one room has
a whirlpool bath, and another has a balcony. Third-floor garret rooms are small
and have no windows, but they are decorated with Degas's works and are less expensive.
Parlors on the first floor display reproductions of the artist's works. Overnighters
may enjoy breakfast on a small private rear courtyard. Save between $20 and $100 on ALL Hotel Bookings Now! | | | | | | | | Hotel
Monaco 333 St. Charles Ave.,
New Orleans, LA 70130, USA

a town that redefines whimsy, the new Hotel Monaco still manages to charm with
a playful, exotic decor. Built in a former Masonic temple, in a building dating
from 1926, it spares no expense in the name of comfort. Rooms have a tropical
theme, with high-back uphostered chairs and Asian-inspired armoires. They are
equipped with robes, CD players, irons, in-room data ports, big TVs, and Italian-made
cotton sheets on the beds. Suites have 2-person whirlpool baths. Service is king:
complimentary perks include morning coffee and newspaper, shoe shine, and evening
