Hotel Nikko
222 Mason St
San Francisco, CA

Walking into the Hotel Nikko can be a daunting experience; the lobby is a vast, multi-leveled expanse of cold, white marble, but the austere feel is quickly trumped by the warm reds and jewel-toned blues of the lobby furniture, by the sound of water gently cascading over tiered marble fountains, and by the whimsical crushed silk organza lamps that resemble 8-foot-tall luminous trees from an alien landscape. The hotel also boasts original abstract sculptures and paintings by local artists from the Durka Chang Gallery.

Decorated by designer and architect Masa Ito, Hotel Nikko's 510 rooms and 22 suites boast plush fabrics in soothing earth tones, fax machines, two-line phones with dataports, CD players, coffee and coffee maker, and a variety of teas. Most of the rooms offer breathtaking views of the bay or cityscape. Two of the suites offer traditional Japanese tatami style accommodations. Click here to save on your next hotel stay

Plus, there's a lounge on each floor decorated with that staple of design magazine layouts--the ubiquitous bowl of fruit (in this case, apples) placed in the center of a table.

Sometimes style matters more than size and the rooms at Hotel Diva, though small, are well designed, with stainless steel headboards that erupt at the top into the hotel's signature "V." Sensual fabrics in blue and gray and delightfully scented toiletries in the bathroom soften the experience. And, with maid service twice daily, you won't ever have to lift a finger.
